DUTERTE URGED TO CERTIFY EDCOM JOINT RESOLUTION AS URGENT

/ 7 August 2021

THE PHILIPPINE Business for Education urged President Rodrigo Duterte to certify as urgent the Education Commission Joint Resolution that aims to address the learning crisis in the country.

The resolution seeks to create a Congressional Oversight Committee on Education.

PBEd earlier submitted a position paper to the Senate expressing that the EdCom resolution manifests its shared goal of addressing the country’s learning crisis that came to light following the release of reports from various international groups showing the abysmal proficiency of Filipino students.

“We believe a reset is in order and a multisectoral, multi-stakeholder EdCom is the best vehicle to facilitate this change,” it said in its position paper.

“We are in a learning crisis unlike any other. Our children’s futures and our country’s economic prospects are at stake. We call on the President to certify as urgent the EDCOM Joint Resolutions. This will signal that the government is serious in addressing the learning crisis,” PBEd Executive Director Love Basillote said.

The Senate Committee on Basic Education on Friday held a technical working group meeting to tackle Senate Joint Resolution No. 10 filed by Senators Juan Edgardo ‘Sonny’ Angara, Sherwin Gatchalian, Franklin Drilon, Joel Villanueva and Grace Poe.

Similar measures in the House of Representatives already passed the committee level on May 27, 2021.
