TOKYO HOPEFUL JUNNA TSUKII SNAGS GOLD MEDAL IN LISBON STINT
Filipino-Japanese karateka Junna Tsukii continued to boost her chances for a 2021 Tokyo Olympics berth as she bagged a gold medal in the World Karate Federation (WKF) in Lisbon, Portugal on Sunday night (Manila time).
Tsukii captured her first Karate Premier League gold medal after her victory over Kazakhstan’s Moldir Zhangbyrbay, 2-0, in the female -50kg kumite event.
The 29-year old karateka shared her achievement in a Facebook post and expressed her gratitude to her supporters.
“Look at my first gold medal on the world caliber stage. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me to this point,” she wrote.
Recently, The 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalist won the gold medal at the Golden Belt Tournament in Cacak, Serbia in March making significant progress in her Olympics campaign.
She had been going back and forth between Japan and Serbia to train in preparation for the qualifiers.
Tsukii, currently ranked at No. 10 overall and No. 4 in Asia, will need to climb the top spot of the Asian rankings or make it to the top 4 in the world to book a ticket for the Olympics.
In case she missed out on a berth via the rankings, her final route for the Summer Games in Tokyo is the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in June to be held in Paris, France.
