DEBUTING DESCHON WINSTON DAZZLES UE AS LA SALLE TAKES FIRST WIN

Deschon "Schonny" Winston quickly made an impact for La Salle after dropping twin digits to outlast the University of the East (UE), 71-66, yesterday in the UAAP Season 84 men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Kind of expected what (Deschon) can do,” said La Salle coach Derrick Pumaren.

“Things weren’t going right for us offensively but he made big shots in the end, and he made a big three that proved to be our cushion.”

While Evan Nelle continued with his marks and gave top shot on the six minutes marker to give La Salle a 10 point advantage against the Red Warriors in the second quarter.

Despite Joshua David being out of the court due to an ACL injury that pushed Winston not to play his natural position, Justine Baltazar helped commandeered the team with his 12 points to end the third quarter on their side, 60-49.

But UE appeared to get a jolt of caffeine as they were able to come close with Jm Tulabut’s three but Winston stopped the hype and pushed pressure to give another 10 points lead in the fourth quarter.

Winston continued his domination to bag the win for the Archers and scored three points with 2:38 minutes left on the shot clock, leaving UE hopeless, 70-61. Nico Paranada tried to close the gap and marked the last shot for the losing UE, 66-71.

“Still not a nice win, but we have to take it. We still made a lot of mistakes. There’s still a lot of things to do for us right now and we just have to work on a lot of things… we just have to work, work, work on our game,” said coach Pumaren.
