TNT’S MIKEY WILLIAMS CLAIMS PBA ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
TNT power forward, Mikey Williams, claimed the Rookie of the Year plum for the 46th season of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) during the PBA Leo Awards at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday, June 5.
The 30-year-old Williams bagged the Finals MVP as he led the Tropang Giga to the All-Filipino crown championship game but failed to claim the title last year.
Still, being the fourth overall pick in the PBA Season 46 Draft, Williams proved his domination on the court as he posted 34.26 statistical points on averages of 19.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
Williams, who missed the TNT campaign against Magnolia last Sunday, finished second in the BPC race both the Philippine Cup and the Governors’ Cup.
And even though Williams was not present during the ceremony, he clearly overpowered fellow PBA newcomers Jamie Malonzo (NorthPort), Santi Santillan and Andrei Caracut (Rain or Shine), and Jerrick Ahanmisi (Magnolia) in a landslide fashion.
Meanwhile, TerraFirma’s Juami Tiongson emerged as the league’s Most Improved Player.
The ceremony lasted for four hours as a prelude for the Season 47 opening with Meralco’s Cliff Hodge, Santos, TnT’s Kelly Williams, Magnolia’s Jio Jalalon and SMB’s Chris Ross composed the All-Defensive Team while NLEX’s Kevin Alas received the Samboy Lim Sportsmanship Award winner.
