WORKING like a well-oiled machine, Team Saints got the better of Team Heroes as it completed a volleyball sweep in their National Collegiate Athletic Association All-Star Game Sunday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

It was Letran’s star player Cha Cuñada who shone the brightest for Team Saints as the latter repulsed Team Heroes, 25-20, 25-23, to make it two in a row in the women’s division.

In men’s action, Team Saints flexed just enough muscle as it needed to storm back from a set down to finally settle the score with Team Heroes, 23-25, 25-17, and 27-25.

Cuñada ended up as the All-Star MVP, in what could be a fitting addition to her growing trophy collection.

She finished with 11 points, siked with two service aces, for Team Saints. Cuñada also earlier won the women’s beach volleyball MVP honors, powering the Lady Knights in ending a 20-year title drought last January.

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta’s Mary Rhose Dapol also lived up to her billing as the women’s volleyball season MVP.

She had nine points and 11 digs, while San Sebastian’s KJ Dionisio added six points for Team Saints.

The alumni also had their moments for Team Saints as College of Saint Benilde’s Jannine Navarro had four points and three receptions, while legendary Perpetual libero Jheck Dionela collected 11 digs and five receptions.

Mapua’s Nicole Ong led Team Heroes with eight points while Jose Rizal University’s Shola Alvarez, former league MVP who is now playing with pro club F2 Logistics, contributed seven kills. Kara Acevedo-Ong, a former Ateneo star who is now television analyst, played as a libero and collected 13 digs.

The Blazers legend and television analyst John Vic de Guzman hammered 15 kills, including the match-winner, and collected six digs, to become the All-Star MVP.

Newly-minted NCAA Season 98 MVP Louie Ramirez of Perpetual added 13 points and four receptions, while Letran’s Vince Himzon was the other Team Saints player who scored in double-digits with 10 points.

Arellano’s Kim Tan had two blocks and two service aces to finish with 10 points while Mapua’s Barbie San Andres chipped in nine kills, six digs, and six receptions for Team Heroes.

The event also featured the engagement of Lady Chief Regine Arocha, who suited up for Team Heroes, and Altas Rey Taneo, who played with Team Saints. Taneo made a surprise wedding proposal and Arocha said yes.

The NCAA will wrap up Season 98 with the return of the cheerleading competition on Sunday at its old stomping grounds at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
