SUMAGUE’S HEROICS LIFT LA SALLE TO 5TH STRAIGHT UAAP BASEBALL FINALS
DE LA SALLE University clinched a nail-biting 6–5 win over University of Santo Tomas on Tuesday (29 Apr 2025), securing a spot in the UAAP Season 87 baseball finals for the fifth straight year.
Rookie Yuan Sumague emerged as the hero, delivering a walk-off hit in the 11th inning at Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. His deep shot to center field allowed co-captain Tuting Samuel to dash home for the game-winning run.
Sumague, a product of Faith Colleges in Batangas, also blasted a three-RBI triple in the seventh inning to give La Salle its first lead, finishing with four RBIs off one hit and a sacrifice fly.
“This was a test of mental toughness,” said La Salle head coach Joseph Orillana. “I reminded them that anyone can step up—not just the seniors. Rookies can lead too, as long as we execute and believe.”
Samuel and JR Alcontin reached scoring position following a sacrifice bunt by Miguel Agoncillo, setting up Sumague’s clutch at-bat. Alcontin also had a strong outing with three hits and one RBI.
UST held a 4–2 lead entering the seventh, thanks to rookie Cedrick Marquez’s solo homer that forced the game into extra innings.
La Salle now awaits the winner of the other semifinal between National University and Adamson University.
