PBA, VARSITY LEAGUES CALL OFF SUNDAY GAMES DUE TO UWAN
THE PHILIPPINE Basketball Association, University Athletic Association of the Philippines, and National Collegiate Athletic Association postponed their scheduled Sunday games as Typhoon Uwan threatened Luzon.
The professional PBA was the first to call off its games on Saturday, putting its scheduled doubleheader at Ynares Center 2 in Rodriguez, Rizal on hold.
TNT was supposed to face Magnolia in the first game, while Ginebra was scheduled to take on Titan Ultra in the second game.
“The PBA urges everyone to take all necessary precautions and stay safe during the typhoon,” the PBA said in a statement.
With the effect still minimal despite Signal No. 2 raised in Metro Manila and Rizal province as of 5 p.m., the league pushed through with its scheduled Saturday games at Ynares Center 1 here.
Blackwater was taking on Converge as of posting time, while Rain or Shine would seek to reclaim the solo lead against NLEX in the second game.
Another PBA team, Meralco, also had a game against the Taiwanese squad Taoyuan in an East Asia Super League at The Capital Arena in Ilagan City, Isabela.
Parts of Isabela were under Signal Nos. 1 and 2 as of posting time.
The collegiate leagues followed suit at almost the same time.
The UAAP postponed its scheduled games in basketball, men’s football and high school volleyball.
“The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, fans and everyone involved is our top priority,” the UAAP said in a statement.
The NCAA will reset its basketball and chess matches.
Like the PBA, both varsity leagues pushed through with their men’s basketball games on Saturday.
At Playtime FilOil Centre in San Juan City, Letran disposed of Jose Rizal University, 85-71, in NCAA Group B, while San Sebastian stunned league-leading Perpetual Help, 62-61, in Group A.
Over at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila, University of the Philippines kept University of the East winless with a 70-61 win, while the game between National University and Adamson was ongoing as of posting. (PNA)
