New recruit Gab Gomez adds to Ateneo’s list of promising standouts
Another eagle has landed at Katipunan to play for the blue and white squad; Fil-Italian shooter Gabriel Gomez is set to join Ateneo’s lineup.
After the Ghana native Kofi Agyei and Nigerian transferee Joseph Obasa have committed to the Blue Eagles, the varsity team has recruited another talent to join their squad.
“I decided to go to Ateneo because it’s a dream since a kid. I always watch Ateneo,” said the 20-year-old Gab Gomez, who was raised in Italy.
“When they made their offer to me, di ko na pinag-isipan. In-accept ko agad kasi minsan lang yung ganoong opportunity. That’s why I decided to go to Ateneo.”
The 6-foot shooter was natively from Nasugbu, Batangas and a former teammate of former Gilas Pilipinas Youth court general Dalph Panopio in Bologna Basketball Playground
Gab Gomez was a graduate of Tourism in ITET Aldo Capitini in Perugia, Italy and has teamed up with Ireland-raised Cholo Anonuevo in Italy Europe Proudly Pinoy back in the 2019 Chooks-to-Go National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) National Finals.
He was known to be active in Basketball tournaments in Perugia; Gomez played in youth club tournament Serie C Gold for Perugia Basket, where he earned the MVP and Best Scorer awards in Memorial Romei, and the Best Prospect in Saini Tournament
Coach Tab Baldwin has high hopes for his new boy in the lineup and already boasts Gomez’s natural skills in playing during interviews.
“In our program, we’re always looking at high-character guys. It’s evident that he’s an outstanding young man,” he said.
“His on-court demeanor is excellent, he can play the point, shooting guard, and he’s an outstanding shooter. He has the European game so that should translate pretty easily to the system that we want to play,” he added.
However, Gomez will have to fight for his time in a loaded Ateneo backcourt with mainstays like Kouame, SJ Belangel, Tyler Tio, Gian Mamuyac, Will Navarro, and Matthew Daves who are expected to return to the squad and seeks for a fourth straight UAAP title next season.
“Medyo pressure kasi champion sila, but it’s exciting cause Ateneo is Ateneo,” he said.
The Fil-Italian player is set to play in UAAP Season 83 with the Eagles and has four eligibility years to play in the league.
