NCR SWIMMER GARRA SECURES 4TH GOLD MEDAL
LAOAG CITY – National Capital Region’s Sophia Rose Garra grabbed her fourth gold medal in the 65th Palarong Pambansa Wednesday with a record-breaking performance in the elementary girls’ 200-meter Individual Medley (IM) at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. Memorial Stadium pool here.
The De La Salle Araneta University in Malabon student clocked 2:31.41 to erase the 2:33.12 mark of Michaela Jasmine Mojdeh (NCR) in Vigan, Ilocos Sur in 2018.
NCR’s Adrienne Reese Tacuboy of Singapore School in Manila took the silver medal in 2:41.09 while Calabarzon’s Rica Jane Ansale got the bronze medal with a time of 2:43.11.
Garra’s earlier victories were in the 100m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 4×50 medley relay (with Kaelev Vianna Cabalida, Ceanna Gabrielle Mitra and Tacuboy).
Riannah Chantelle Coleman of the National Academy of Sports also set a new meet record in the secondary girls’ 50m breaststroke, clocking 34.24 seconds to eclipse the 34.35 set by Bicol Region’s Beatrize Maria Mabalay in Cebu City last year.
Coleman’s other gold medal came from the 200m breaststroke, winning the event in 2:45.00 over Central Luzon’s Taylor Brooke Saliba (2:48.30) and NCR’s Saltiel Cherrie Daiz II (2:50.79).
NCR’s Findlay Jake Mackenzie, Patricia Mae Santor and Raina Samantha Leyran, and Calabarzon’s Peter Cyrus Dean also dominated their respective events.
Mackenzie of Elizabeth Seton School in Las Piñas City clocked 2:31.17 in the elementary boys’ 200m to prevail over Calabarzon’s Jedrek Marcus de Leon (2:31.80) and Ilocos Region’s Dominic Josef Nacnac (2:37.50).
Santor dominated the secondary girls’ 200m IM in 2:31.12. Central Visayas’ Kacie Gabrielle Tiongko (2:31.16) and Western Visayas’ Maxene Hayley (2:33.22) were second and third, respectively.
Leyran pocketed the gold medal in the secondary girls’ 50m butterfly event with a time of 29.36 seconds. Western Visayas’ Nuche Veronica Ibit (29.39) won the silver and NCR’s Savinnah Zoey Oliveros (29.71) settled for the bronze.
Dean secured the secondary boys’ 200m IM gold medal in 2:12.71, beating NCR’s Joaquin Federico Mirasol (2:15.35) and Ilocos Region’s Anton Paulo Dominick Della (2:15.88). (PNA)
