Filipino vaulter Ej Obiena triumphed at the 2021 Taby Stavhoppsgala Street Pole Vault in Sweden last Friday.

Obiena raised the Filipino pride once again by winning the 5.80 meters and defeated 2016 Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil and Andrew Irwin of the US.

The three of them, Obiena, Braz, and Irwin vaulted for 5.80 but Ej was able to put in a solid performance via countback that made him clutched the vault.

He started the 5.60m and from there went to a three-time failed attempt of 5.90 which ended him up in the 5.80m.

Obiena’s last record was 5.87 in which he also bagged the gold medal in Poland.

“Another 1st place finish, no rest for the determined,” Obiena posted on social media.

And so, the Filipino pride is set to see in action once again in the Stockholm Diamond League on Sunday where he will face Armand Duplantis of Sweden, Renaud Lavillenie of France, and Christopher Nilsen of the United States, who have the best record are 6.10m and 5.92m.
