CHED TIES UP WITH PSC TO DEVELOP COLLEGIATE SPORTS PROGRAM

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) on Wednesday, March 10, have collaborated to further develop sports at the collegiate level.

PSC chairman Butch Ramirez and CHED chief Prospero de Vera signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the formulation of a unified tertiary school sports development program.

“If CHED, based on the MOA, can activate our program, I think in 3 years-time we will see the improvement of Philippine sports, in terms of coaching and administration. And we can tap not only tertiary, but we could cascade to DepEd and bring this matter to under 18 years old and to the elementary,” Ramirez said.

“This gives us the missing link in providing a professional development in continuous sports education and will cater more to the educational aspect of our teachers in coaching,” he added.

Under the agreement, both the PSC and CHED will work together to provide ample training for student-athletes, coaches, and sports officials, as well as continuing education to ensure optimal training and coaching skills for the future sports stars.

The ongoing National Sports Coaching Certification Course will be subject to this partnership, effectively regulating this continuing education initiative of the PSC.

“We welcome this MOA as it will allow us to join forces with the PSC in joint projects that we can initiate. We commit the support of CHED in all the undertakings on higher education sports development and wellness,” De Vera said.

De Vera said sports medicine will also be included in many developments in sports. The MOA will also elevate the quality of research and planning in the field of sports.

Ramirez reiterated that the partnership might pave the way to discover athletes and coaches who can excel in the amateur, professional, and national team levels.

“This gives us the missing link in providing a professional development in continuous sports education and will cater more to the educational aspect of our teachers in coaching,” he said.

More details on the PSC-CHED partnership will be furnished during the National Sports Summit

However, despite the partnership between CHED and PSC, the resume of the college sports remains unseen.

The Joint Administrative Order (JAO) still prohibits student-athletes, varsity teams, and collegiate leagues to train and compete.
