Champion boxer Ancajas flys to US, eyes ring return
“He is in good condition. He is where he needs to be and was not burned out from training,” trainer and manager Joven Jimenez said before Jerwin Ancajas fly to the United States on Wednesday to meet his handlers and finalize his next title defense.
“We are very excited to fight because we’ve been training and sparring since January but I’m not worried about overtraining him because we give Jerwin sufficient rest,” his manager said in an interview with GMA News Online.
The reigning IBF world super flyweight champion and manager are set to leave for Los Angeles, Jimenez said that they will be given at least one month to execute the final phase of their training camp in preparation for the next fight.
A possible November fight is on the table according to Jimenez, his prizefighter will make the ninth defense of his world title against Jonathan Rodriguez in a yet to be determined date in Vegas, however, the Mexican slugger being the expected challenger still remains up in the air.
Ancajas and Rodriguez were supposed to face each other inside the ring last April, but Top Rank decided to reschedule the match following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
“The key is getting in the US and then we’ll sort things out,” said Manny Pacquiao (MP) Promotions President Sean Gibbons on Tuesday in a virtual press conference.
Meanwhile, leaving with Team Ancajas is first time pro and Olympic-bound Eumir Felix Marcial.
