BLU GIRLS ASSERT SOFTBALL DOMINANCE, CLINCH GOLD IN FACEOFF WITH SINGAPOREANS
BANGKOK—The Philippine Blu Girls reasserted their dominance in women’s softball after edging out Singapore, 4-1, to win the gold in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games on Friday in Pathum Thani.
The Blu Girls scored three runs in the sixth to take the lead before starting pitcher Royevel Palma completed an outstanding performance on the mound to capture a record-extending 11th gold at Queen Sirikit Baseball Stadium.
Before this year’s edition, softball was last held back home in 2019 at Clark, Pampanga.
Their win came a day after the Blu Boys got back at Singapore for losing in 2019 to get the men’s softball gold.
Nicole Hammoude scored on an error before Angelu Gabriel doubled to left to add two more during the decisive bottom half of the sixth, before Palma shut the door on Singapore in the seventh and final inning.
Palma, a left-handed pitcher, struck out 10 batters while allowing four hits in a complete-game effort.
She got some early trouble in the second inning when Singapore scored the first run courtesy of Wei En Lim’s single that scored Cacia Tan from second.
But the Blu Girls tied it up in the third when Mary Joy Libaton reached home from second on an error.
