Letters of Youth

I AM MY OWN STANDARD

/ 20 August 2021

For once in your life, have you ever faced the mirror and asked multiple questions about yourself? You start from looking at the definitions of your face all the way down to the curves of your body. You observe yourself and suddenly, in a blink of an eye, all the insecurities begin to gain control of your mind.

The truth is this doesn’t only happen once, some of us experience it every single day. We often criticize ourselves for not being perfect.

“Am I worthy to be called someone pretty?” “Why do I have many scars?” “Why am I not beautiful?”. These are just some of the questions that we often ask when the cruel standards of beauty take over our mind. Some of us lose confidence, afraid to show our true selves and face the world. We stay hidden because of it, but are you willing to stay hidden every single time?

Loving yourself is a choice. A hard choice, actually. It is one of those things that are easier said than done. However, remember that it is a process and must be taken into account step-by-step.

Your imperfections are beautiful. They are part of who you are and every single scar on your body has a story to tell. As you learn how to embrace your flaws, it’s also time for you to unlock the door that’s keeping you unseen. Face the world and be confident because you are beautiful and you can only be defined by yourself.

The only standard of beauty that matters is how you look at yourself. So the next time you stare at yourself in-front of the mirror, you start from looking at the definitions of your face all the way down to the curves of your body and tell yourself that you are beautiful every single way.
