MORE THAN 80 FAMILIES BENEFIT FROM UP CEBU COMMUNITY PANTRY

/ 27 April 2021

OVER 80 families from Barangay Tipolo in Mandaue City, Cebu benefited from the community pantry set up by a group of college students from the University of the Philippines Cebu.

Janneloise Baylon, one of the founders of the Sugbo Community Pantry, said that they were inspired by the first community pantry in Maginhawa St. in Quezon City and decided to adapt the concept to help residents affected by the pandemic.

The Sugbo community pantry is located at the back gate of the Colegio de la Immaculada Concepcion in Mandaue.

Baylon thanked those who helped in the initiative. The group received P18,974 and spent the amount to purchase 60 kilos of assorted vegetables, three sacks of rice, 320 canned goods, and 13 trays of eggs.

She also thanked the school for allowing them to use the space and for donating vegetables from its own garden.

However, she shared that their biggest challenge is how to make their community pantry sustainable.
