ISLAND TEACHERS IN EAST SAMAR ADOPTS HOME TUTORING
WHILE physical interaction between teachers and students had been banned because of the pandemic, teachers in an island in Eastern Samar adopted a home-visitation scheme to ensure that learners will receive quality education.
The island of Sulu-an is one of the areas in the country without Covid19 cases. Because of this, officials of the Sulu-an Integrated School decided to adapt a home visitation approach this school year.
“The island is a solitary island. Wala pong ibang adjacent barangays. It is also one and a half hour away from the nearest island, Homonhon kaya mababa po talaga ang chance ng infection,” Ronron Salvedia, the school’s head teacher, said.
Every Friday, the teachers visit their students to check on their progress. The teachers also ensure that the learners have a good grasp of their lessons especially in writing, reading and mathematics.
Although there are no Covid cases in the island, teachers follow strict health and safety protocols while doing their rounds.
“Despite our shortfalls and deficiencies, we try our level best to find ways in bringing quality basic education right at the doorsteps of our learners in this trying time when they need us the most. As delineated by our beloved Regional Director, Ramir B. Uytico, ‘We in the DepEd must be the last one to surrender,” Salvedia added.
