The Provincial prosecutor of Davao del Norte dismissed for lack of probable cause the charges filed against seven persons arrested by the police in an operation in a Lumad school in February.

The seven — Chad Booc, Segundo Lagatos Melong, Benito Bay-ao, Moddie Mansimoy-at, Esmelito Oribawan, Roshelle Mae Porcadilla and Jomar Benag — were charged with serious illegal detention.

Bayan Muna Rep. Eufemia Cullamat on Friday welcomed the dropping of the charges.

“Sa tatlong buwan na pagkakulong at ilegal na pag-aresto ng ‘Bakwit School 7’, napakagandang balita na sila ay lalaya na ngayong araw na ito dahil ibinasura ng korte ang mga gawa-gawang kaso laban sa kanila,” Cullamat said.

The seven adults had been detained since February 17.

The prosecutor ordered the Central Visayas police to immediately release the detained teachers, community elders and Lumad students.

“Pero hindi dito matatapos ang laban natin, dahil biktima pa rin ang mga estudyanteng Lumad at mga guro ng red-tagging at harassment ng estado. Maraming biktimang bilanggong politikal dahil sa matinding red-tagging sa mga progresibong organisasyon at indibidwal,” Cullamat stressed.

“Kailangang managot at singilin ang humuli sa Bakwit School 7, parusahan sila sa ginawa nilang matinding harassment sa pito. At tuloy ang panawagan na palayain ang lahat ng bilanggong pulitikal at ibasura na ang mga gawa-gawang kaso,” she added.
