BJMP NAUJAN BEGINS BARBERING COURSE FOR PDLs

/ 27 February 2025

TO AID the reintegration of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) into society, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Naujan District Jail has launched a new barbering course, as reported by BJMP MIMAROPA regional information officer Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The initiative, which was created in response to high demand from PDLs, aims to equip them with practical skills they can use after their release to build a better future.

“This is part of a broader effort by the BJMP to offer courses that align with the PDLs’ interests. By participating in these programs, they can learn valuable skills that will improve their chances of finding meaningful work after leaving the facility,” said Anglo.

Currently, 20 PDLs are enrolled in the program, gaining hands-on experience to develop their skills. One participant, Anthony (not his real name), is working toward becoming a licensed barber.

“I have never had an opportunity like this to focus on a career path after my release,” he said.

Acting district jail warden Jail Senior Inspector Herman Jose Madrigal emphasized the importance of continuing such efforts to equip jail residents with the skills needed to thrive in society.

He added that the next step would be to offer extended courses and provide barbering tools in the facility, ensuring that former clients can secure employment upon release.

PDLs are closely monitored by jail personnel, as the job requires the use of blades and scissors.
