BANGSAMORO GOV DISPLEASED BY CTU’S CONTROVERSIAL SINULOG PERFORMANCE

/ 15 January 2024

THE Bangsamoro government was ‘grossed out’ by the Cebu Technological University’s inappropriate and insensitive performance during the 2024 opening ceremony of Sinulog Festival in Cebu.

This came after netizens on social media denounced CTU for allegedly ‘misrepresenting’ Moros with their performance.

According to videos that have surfaced across the internet, dancers wearing traditional Bangsamoro outfit were seen holding a figure of the Sto. Nino during the performance.

“Obviously, the Sinulog Festival is a deeply religious event of our Christian brothers and sisters which we respect. However, the inclusion of Bangsamoro and Muslim cultural arts and symbols in that festival is indeed misplaced,” Bangsamoro Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim said in a statement on Saturday.

“While we acknowledge the enthusiasm and interest shown by (CTU) in embracing, and to an extent, mainstreaming our cultural practices, we also believe that such expressions should come with genuine sensitivity and deep understanding of the unique and vibrant Bangsamoro cultural context,” he added.

Ebrahim also said the Bangsamoro government is open to constructive conversations and collaboration to properly promote cultural exchange rooted in respect.

CTU has since apologized for the matter and said it will conduct an internal investigation regarding the matter.

Netizens were saddened by the event, noting CTU should have thorough research and be sensitive next time to prevent similar instances.
