YOUTH GROUPS TO CHR, NBI: PROBE HARASSMENT OF ACTIVISTS

/ 22 May 2021

SEVERAL youth groups on Friday urged the Commission on Human Rights and National Bureau of Investigation to look into alleged cases of harassment perpetrated by the government.

These alleged cases reportedly include red-tagging of campus journalists, according to the College Editors Guild of the Philippines.

“For campus journalists, for instance, CEGP has documented a lot of cases of red-tagging, as well as other series of harassment and threats it received from a suspected troll account,” the group said.

Last March, student journalists from the University of the Philippines expressed alarm over the death threats received by several members of the UP publications from unknown individuals.

There were also reports that some members of the campus press in other regions were baselessly accused of being recruiters for the New People’s Army.

The Guild also slammed President Rodrigo Duterte for refusing to accept criticism and for making personal attacks against his critics.

“The current regime’s brand of leadership is defined by committing obvious corruption, gross negligence coupled with repressive policies, and pernicious attacks against the Filipino people. His entire administration brought a huge disservice to the nation and must be convicted for all the crimes he has committed,” it said.

Anakbayan meanwhile decried the “fabricated and baseless” allegations against its members.
