STUDENT and youth groups belonging to the ‘No to Mandatory ROTC Network’ have pledged to boycott in the coming mid-term elections senators who support the passage of the measure advocating the revival of ROTC at the tertiary level.

At the same time, students from state universities are registering their opposition to the order to fast-track deliberations on the bill.

“Kulang na kulang ang pasilidad, kagamitan, building at kahit propesor. Nakikipag-unahan pa nga ang mga estudyante para sa slot ng mga nais nilang kurso sa mga state universities and colleges dahil limitado ang pwede tanggapin ng pamantasan dahil sa kakulangan sa budget,” said Althea Calahatian, co-convenor of DEFEND PUP.

“Ako mismo gusto ko maging psychologist, pero napunta ako sa isang business course. Imbes na magsayang ng pondo sa military boots at uniporme, sana napunta na lang to sa classrooms. Wala rin naman kaming espasyo na pagmamartsahan kung ipatupad ang Mandatory ROTC,” she added.

Students from private schools also expressed concerns over its impact on basic students’ rights.

“Nalalagay sa panganib ang mga estudyante sa Mandatory ROTC. Hindi impossible na mangyari ito, noong 2001 pinatay si Mark Welson Chua dahil isiniwalat niya ang korapsyon ng Mandatory ROTC. Makitid na ang espasyo sa mga private school, itong Mandatory ROTC ay for sure na mas papakitidin pa ang aming espasyo at kalayaang akademiko,” stressed Annie Nichole Agon, Central Student Council Candidate of UST and chairperson of Kabataan Partylist UST.

Senior high school students, who will face the Mandatory ROTC in the coming years, voiced their opposition.

“Ginawa ang K-12 para raw maging globally competitive kaming mga kabataan, ang Mandatory ROTC ba ay kakailanganin sa kolehiyo? Dagdag lamang ito sa hirap na dinaranas naming mga estudyante at mga magulang namin, both academically and financially. Ang bigat na nga ng mandatory plus two years sa high school, lalong pabigat ang mandatory ROTC pagtapak namin sa kolehiyo. Kailan naman magiging priority ang standards, interes at konsiderasyon ng mga estudyante? Hindi lab rat ang mga estudyante,” added Gwyneth Gailo, a senior high school student from Emilio Aguinaldo College.

Given all concerns raised, the National Union of Students of the Philippines called for a boycott against senators who will vote in favor of the Mandatory ROTC Bill.

“Asahan po ninyo, na kukumbinsihin ng libo-libang mga konseho ng mag-aaral ang bawat botanteng kabataan na wag kayo boto, at sisiguraduhin nating di kayo makakabalik sa pwesto, sa 2025 man o sa 2028. Markado na kayo. At syempre, kailanman di natin papalampasin na magpaksarap lang sa kapangyarihan si Marcos Jr. mismo na siyang nagtulak ng patakaran na to. May mananagot,” said NUSP Secretary-General Ceejay Bebis.
