TO GIVE importance to Last Mile Schools, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte attended the opening of classes in two remote schools in Cebu province on Tuesday.
Duterte said she wanted “to make sure education is accessible to far-flung barangays.”
She first went to the Kaluangan 1 Primary School in Asturias town. The school has 63 pupils and four teaching and non-teaching personnel.
She also visited the Melecio Tito Elementary School in Oguis, Danao City.
The Vice President turned over a newly constructed four-classroom building to each of the two schools.
She also distributed school bags to the children, a program under the Office of the Vice President.
Last Mile schools are usually makeshift and non-standard. They have no electricity, no funds for repair and are usually located in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged and Conflict Affected Areas.
The Last Mile Schools Program was introduced under former Education Secretary Leonor Briones.
Undersecretary Epimaco Densing said 15 Last Mile school buildings were turned over in time for the opening of classes for School Year 2023-2024.
