UPLIFT PLIGHT OF TEACHERS, GOV’T URGED

/ 6 October 2022

THE Alliance of Concerned Teachers urged the government to uplift the plight of teachers, saying this is linked to education recovery.

“It is in the state of our teachers where the real situation of the educational system is best reflected. For at the end of the day, all troubles of education fall upon the shoulders of our teachers, who, as frontliners of education, are expected to conquer all so that learning can happen inside the classrooms,” Vladimir Quetua, the group’s chairperson, said.

He lamented that most of the teachers are “overworked and underpaid.”

“The gravity of the current education crisis brought about by decades of state neglect has rendered our teachers more overworked, underpaid and undersupported than ever. Miserly government spending on education has created big shortages in schools, classrooms, facilities, teachers, education support personnel, and teaching and learning resources,” Quetua said.

He asked the government to upgrade teachers’ salaries, ease their workload and provide them laptops and internet allowance.

“Our education system is in the throes of crisis. The government must take care of our teachers who breath life to it,” Quetua said.
