UMAK ‘EMBO’ STUDENTS GRANTED FEE EXEMPTION AMID JURISDICTION CHANGE
STUDENTS from the University of Makati residing in the “embo” barangays, now under the jurisdiction of Taguig City, can complete the current school year without additional fees.
This was announced by UMak on Friday in an advisory posted on Facebook.
“After the consultation with Mayor Abby Binay, the reclassification of UMak students who are residents of the EMBO barangays as non-Makati residents will be effective next Academic Year (AY 2024-2025) instead of this coming 2nd semester of AY 2023-2024,” the school said.
“This will provide students, parents, and guardians with ample time to adjust and prepare,” it added.
In a separate Facebook post on Thursday night, UMak Office of the Student Regent said that token tuition for non-Makati residents studying at UMak is P3,000 per semester, in addition to miscellaneous fees.
To note, tuition in the university is free for residents of Makati.
“We thank Mayor Abby Binay for her relentless concern to the welfare of the students from EMBO barangays,” the school said.
In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Fort Bonifacio and 10 EMBO barangays are under the jurisdiction of Taguig.
Last June 2023, the SC rejected the Makati City government’s motion asking the high court to allow it to file a second motion for reconsideration over its territorial dispute with Taguig.
