STUDENT councils in Metro Manila joined mounting calls for justice for the family of Sonya and Frank Gregorio, who were killed by a policeman in Tarlac.
STUDENT councils in Metro Manila joined mounting calls for justice for the family of Sonya and Frank Gregorio, who were killed by a policeman in Tarlac.
Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca shot dead his neighbors Sonya and her son after a heated argument over the use of a noisemaker.
The video of the killing has become viral.
The University of the East Manila-University Student Council called for an end to police brutality.
“Sa patuloy na pagkitil sa boses, kalayaan, at buhay ng mga masang Pilipino, kami ay hindi mananahimik. WE DEMAND JUSTICE NOW!” it said on Facebook.
The National University Student Government lamented that what happened to the Gregorios is one of the “many extrajudicial killings” committed under the present administration.
“A great instance of extrajudicial killing is what happened to the Gregorios and we cannot afford to let the numbers go higher. With this, we reiterate and remind the youth to go to the nearest Comelec safely and register to vote. We cannot tolerate the extrajudicial killings and myriad cases of human rights violations in the country. Together, raise your voices and let us hold the person in uniform accountable,” NUSG said.
The University of the Philippines Diliman University Freshie Council condemned the killing and called on the government to address the human rights violations.
“The Filipino people have their right to life. They deserve effective and responsive public service from authorities that are bound to serve the people without prejudice and impartiality. The law should always be blind to a person’s position and character and should be upheld fairly and justly, and the law must never be manipulated in favor of the oppressor,” it said on Facebook.
“As we clamor for justice to be served, we will not back down and will continue to fight for the rights of every Filipino. We have seen the culture of impunity and killings perpetrated in our society, and this culture will continue to prevail unless actions from the government and the President are taken in order to truly serve the people and their interests,” it added.
The Alliance of Concerned Teachers also condemned the brutal abuse of power.
“This is not an isolated incident in the too many cases of extrajudicial killings and police brutality involving men in uniform,” the group said.
“In the more than four years of Duterte’s reign, we have seen how uniformed men have emerged as a privileged group above the law, instead of its implementer. Most condemnable are its highest officials who notoriously bends the law to their favor while cruelly and unforgivingly imposing the same laws on ordinary Filipinos who are grappling to survive amid the multiple crises plaguing the country,” it added.
