SOLONS PUSH FOR PHILIPPINE CINEMA AND THEATER APPRECIATION IN HIGH SCHOOLS

/ 2 October 2025

AS THE COUNTRY wrapped up the celebration of Philippine Film Industry Month, a group of lawmakers filed a measure seeking to strengthen the appreciation of Filipino cinema and theater among the youth.

House Bill No. 5037, or the Philippine Cinema and Theater Appreciation Act for High School Students, aims to institutionalize programs that will expose students to local films and stage plays while deepening their understanding of Philippine culture and identity.

The bill was authored by Kabataan Party-list Rep. Atty. Renee Co, with the support of ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Rep. Sarah Elago, Northern Samar 1st District Rep. Niko Raul Daza, Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Javi Benitez, Sultan Kudarat 2nd District Rep. Bella Suansing, and Kamanggagawa Rep. Eli San Fernando.

The measure highlights the importance of promoting the local creative industry, which often takes a backseat to foreign media. According to its proponents, Filipino films and stage plays not only enrich students’ critical thinking skills but also foster cultural pride.

“It is important to support and appreciate our film and theater industries. These art forms not only entertain but also embody the stories, struggles, and aspirations of the Filipino people,” the authors stressed.

If enacted, the bill would integrate cinema and theater appreciation into school programs, encourage partnerships with artists and cultural institutions, and provide students with opportunities to engage with Filipino creative works.

The lawmakers emphasized that instilling early appreciation for Philippine arts will help strengthen national identity while supporting the growth of the local creative industry.
