SOLON PUSHES TO STRENGTHEN NUTRITION LAW FOR STUDENTS
QUEZON City 5th District Representative Patrick Michael Vargas is calling for stronger implementation of the Masustansyang Pagkain para sa Batang Pilipino Act or Republic Act No. 11037, stressing that malnutrition remains one of the biggest barriers to children’s education and overall development.
During the recent observance of School Health Week, Vargas noted that despite existing programs, many Filipino students still go to school hungry—affecting their focus, learning ability, and long-term growth.
To address this, Vargas has filed House Bill No. 5681, which seeks to expand and modernize the government’s feeding and nutrition program for schoolchildren.
The proposed measure introduces fortified hot meals, milk-based supplements, and a stronger coordination mechanism among the Department of Education, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and the Department of Health through a centralized school kitchen system that would partner with local food suppliers.
“Investing in nutrition is also investing in national development,” Vargas emphasized.
“Our students can learn better when they are not distracted by hunger,” he added.
The lawmaker also called on all sectors—government, private organizations, and communities—to unite in promoting child health and nutrition programs, highlighting that true education goes beyond academics.
“Education is not only about reading and writing,” he added. “It’s also about taking care of the health and well-being of our children.”
Vargas’ proposed amendments aim to make the national feeding program more sustainable, locally sourced, and responsive to the evolving needs of Filipino learners—ensuring that no child is left behind due to hunger or poor nutrition.
