SOLON PUSHES FOR THE INTEGRATION OF COMPUTER SCIENCE IN K-12
TO EQUIP the youth with skills indispensable for progress, Parañaque City Rep. Joy Myra Tambunting filed a measure integrating computer science in the basic education curriculum.
House Bill 9286 or the proposed Computer Science in Schools Act aims to revise the K-12 program to create a computer science and information and communications technology strand for Senior High School students.
This means that the ICT strand currently under the Technology and Livelihood Education and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood tracks shall be moved to the academic program.
House Bill 9286 mandates the Department of Education to ensure that the use of computers, or the introduction of necessary computer and modern technology skills shall be incorporated in the instruction of all subjects in all levels.
Tambunting stressed that most industries use data and computer technology on a daily basis.
“As such, it is important to ensure that the general population are reoriented and fully prepared for a world where technology is omnipresent,” she said in her explanatory note.
The lawmaker explained that Computer Science is important in strengthening education models and preparing students for the future through the study of the theory behind the applications, structure, and design of a computational system, and the specialization in the theory or computation.
