SOLON FILES BILL TO PREVENT RISING CHILDHOOD OBESITY

/ 12 April 2026

SOUTHERN Leyte 2nd District Rep. Christopher “Coco” Yap has filed a measure seeking to institutionalize a comprehensive framework to address the growing problem of childhood obesity in the country.

Under House Bill 8104, or the proposed Childhood Obesity Prevention Act, Yap noted that cases of childhood overweight and obesity have been steadily increasing in the Philippines, posing long-term health risks such as diabetes, heart disease, and mental health conditions.

He warned that these conditions not only affect children and their families but also place a significant burden on the public healthcare system.

“Many unhealthy habits begin early, and without action, today’s children face higher medical costs and poorer quality of life as adults,” Yap said.

The lawmaker emphasized that schools are a critical setting for prevention efforts, as children spend much of their day on campus, consume food sold within or near school grounds, and develop routines that shape lifelong habits.

The proposed measure seeks to strengthen existing nutrition programs by promoting healthier school food environments, requiring daily physical activity, and enhancing nutrition education for parents and communities.

It also proposes limiting the sale and marketing of high-sugar foods and beverages in public schools, encouraging healthier options around school premises, and ensuring that students engage in regular physical activity.

Yap said that by combining improved nutrition, exercise, and family participation, the bill aims to support healthier growth, better learning outcomes, and improved overall well-being among Filipino children.
