SOLON EYES TO INTEGRATE CLIMATE CHANGE EDUCATION IN GRADES 2 TO SHS
CAMARINES Sur 2nd District Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte pushed for a measure seeking to integrate Climate Change Education into the science curriculum of Grades 2 to Senior High School.
In his House Bill 8222 or the proposed Climate Change Education Act, Villafuerte stressed integrating climate change education will help not only understanding but in actively preserving and protecting the environment.
He noted the Philippines has been listed as the number one most affected country by climate change due to its geography, as per Global Climate Risk Index 2015.
“We are located in the West Pacific Ocean, surrounded by naturally warm waters that will likely get even warmer as average sea-surface temperatures continue to rise,”
Villafuerte said in his explanatory note.
The solon stressed knowledge regarding climate change phenomenon helps young people to understand the consequences of global warming, encourage behavior changes in what is already considered an emergency on a global scale.
The measure mandates the Department of Education to prescribe the integration of Climate Change education under the Science Curriculum of Grades 2 to Senior High School level, in both private and public educational institutions.
The instruction of the subject shall include both theoretical and practical components to ensure effective learning and deep understanding of the subject matter.
