SENATOR URGES STRONGER SCHOOL SAFETY MEASURES AFTER RARE NUEVA ECIJA SHOOTING

/ 10 August 2025

SENATOR  Bam Aquino on Saturday (09 Aug 2025) expressed deep concern over the recent shooting incident at a Nueva Ecija school, calling for stronger safety and mental health measures in educational institutions.

As chair of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Aquino described the case—where a male student shot a female classmate—as “truly saddening” and a reminder of the need to keep schools safe.

“I’m proud that we’ve had no school shootings in the Philippines. They are common in the United States, but here, I believe this may be the first case I’ve heard of in many years, perhaps even decades,” Aquino told DWIZ.

He cited the Basic Education, Mental Health, and Wellness Promotion Law, signed in December 2024, which mandates the creation of care centers in schools to address mental health issues and bullying, as well as increasing the number of guidance counselors. However, he noted DepEd’s struggle in fully implementing the law.

Aquino also raised concerns over how the firearm was brought onto campus.

“We don’t check bags in schools. Unlike in the U.S., we don’t have metal detectors. Maybe it’s time to discuss whether such measures are needed,” he said.

The senator recalled a previous case in which a parent brought a gun to school, underscoring the need to review security protocols. He said he would ask DepEd officials on Tuesday about their plans to prevent similar incidents.

Aquino stressed that care centers, as required by law, could give troubled students access to professional help before issues escalate.

“If there are care centers and guidance counselors, students facing personal problems can get help before things escalate,” he said.
