SENATOR URGES DECISIVE ACTION TO AVERT EDUCATION CRISIS

/ 19 June 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian is calling for swift and decisive action to address the country’s worsening education crisis, warning that the future of an entire generation is at stake.

“We set up future generations for failure when 9 out of 10 children finish Grade 5 without being able to read,” Gatchalian said. “Let’s not allow this education crisis to continue any longer.”

As classes resume nationwide, the senator stressed the urgent need to fully implement the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL) Program—designed to help students recover from learning losses, particularly in reading and mathematics.

“Ensuring our learners master literacy and numeracy is urgent and non-negotiable,” Gatchalian emphasized, noting that Filipino students’ long-term success depends on the government’s ability to deliver effective interventions.

He also pushed for the full implementation of the Early Childhood Care and Development System Act, stressing that a strong foundation during early childhood is vital for lifelong learning and achievement.

“A solid foundation in the early years leads to better outcomes not just in school but in life,” he added.

The senator has consistently championed education reforms, citing poor literacy rates and declining academic performance as urgent challenges requiring a whole-of-government approach.

As stakeholders prepare for another school year, Gatchalian’s message is clear: the time for half-measures is over. “We owe it to our children to act now,” he said.
