SENATOR UNDERSCORES IMPORTANCE OF STRENGTHENING TEACHERS’ EDUCATION
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the importance of strengthening teachers’ education in the country.
During a public hearing conducted by the Committee on Basic Education on the implementation of Republic Act No. 11713, or the Excellence in Teachers Education Act, Gatchalian noted that misalignment in course design could compromise student learning.
He said this misalignment could be addressed by revising the basic education curriculum.
According to Gatchalian, 80 to 90 percent of students who take up education in college end up teaching in public schools.
“We’ve also included a scholarship program in the bill to attract the best to join the teaching workforce,” Gatchalian said.
“We’ve also institutionalized the National Educators Academy of the Philippines to ensure that in-service teachers continue improving their knowledge and receive ongoing training,” he added.
