SENATOR STRESSES CHILD PROTECTION MUST BE A PRIORITY

/ 12 January 2026

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Sunday urged the Food and Drug Administration  to conduct a thorough investigation into the recall of Nestlé Philippines’ Nan Optipro and Nankid Optipro products, part of the company’s infant and growing-up milk formula line.

In a statement, Gatchalian said the recall has raised serious concerns among parents and caregivers who relied on the products for their children’s nutrition.

“Like many parents who relied on these products, I am deeply concerned about the possible effects on the health and safety of children,” the senator said.

“It is important that we clarify how this happened and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future,” he added.

Gatchalian stressed that the FDA should determine the circumstances that led to the recall and assess whether existing safety and quality control measures were sufficient.

He also underscored the need for transparency to restore public confidence, particularly in products intended for infants and young children.

The senator said he expects Nestlé Philippines to fully cooperate with any investigation initiated by the FDA and to properly address the concerns of affected parents and caregivers, including the provision of clear information and appropriate assistance.

The FDA has yet to issue further details on the scope of the recall and the specific reasons behind it.

Meanwhile, Gatchalian reiterated that protecting children’s health must remain a top priority, calling for swift and decisive action from both regulators and manufacturers.
