SENATOR SLAMS LACK OF SANITATION AND WATER ACCESS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

/ 14 June 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian raised alarm on Friday over the continued lack of access to basic sanitation and clean water in public schools across the Philippines, calling the situation “unacceptable.”

In a statement, Gatchalian emphasized that water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities should be considered a non-negotiable standard in all schools.

“Having adequate WASH facilities in our public schools should never be treated as optional,” he said. “They are fundamental to the health, dignity, and safety of our learners.”

He cited findings from the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM II), which in its Year Two Report revealed that more than 1,000 Last Mile Schools still lack toilets.

“This is unacceptable in a country that values education as a fundamental right,” Gatchalian said, adding, “Hindi natin dapat hayaang maging normal ang kawalan ng tubig at pasilidad para sa kalinisan sa ating mga paaralan.”

He urged the Department of Education and relevant agencies to immediately identify these schools and take urgent action to ensure every child learns in an environment that protects their health and upholds their dignity.
