SENATOR SEEKS URGENT ACTION AMID MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS
SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian has called for swift and concrete government action to address what he described as a ‘mental health crisis’ in the country, following alarming data from the Philippine National Police indicating that 2,000 people died by suicide from January to June 2025.
“This confirms that our country is grappling with a mental health crisis that needs our urgent attention,” he said. “We should not wait for more lives to be lost before we act.”
Gatchalian stressed the need for the full implementation and proper funding of mental health laws—including the Mental Health Act and the Basic Education Mental Health and Well-Being Promotion Act—noting that these must go beyond symbolic intent and become tangible support systems.
“These laws must not remain promises on paper. They must be brought to life—adequately funded and made truly accessible to every Filipino who needs help,” he added.
Advocates have repeatedly called for stronger government investment in mental health services, including hiring more professionals, improving access to counseling, and launching grassroots-based programs.
Gatchalian pledged continued work with fellow legislators and agencies to strengthen mental health policies, especially for students and vulnerable communities.
