SENATOR SEEKS BIGGER FUNDING FOR EDUCATION

/ 3 February 2025

SENATOR Loren Legarda is advocating for increased funding to implement reforms in the education sector, as outlined in the 2nd Congressional Commission on Education’s Year 2 report, titled “Fixing the Foundations: A Matter of National Survival.”

Legarda stressed the need for sustained, decisive action, emphasizing her commitment to securing substantial funding for education. She is pushing for policies that ensure access to quality learning environments and adequate support for both teaching and non-teaching personnel.

The report highlights urgent gaps in the education system: Only 25% of Filipino children meet the recommended energy intake between ages 6 and 12 months; foundational competency deficiencies appear as early as Grade 3; up to 50% of the school year is lost due to disruptions like natural disasters; and 55% of public schools lack fully designated school principals.

The report advocates for a shift in priorities, focusing on early childhood education and nutrition to build critical competencies, while ensuring that schools have skilled leadership, sufficient personnel, adequate classrooms, and essential resources.

Legarda underscored the importance of a multisectoral approach to education reform. She called for a united effort from government agencies, local government units, the private sector, international partners, civil society organizations, indigenous communities, and community-based organizations to build an inclusive, equitable education system. She stressed that strengthening disaster preparedness, public health, workforce development, cultural preservation, poverty reduction, and peacebuilding is vital for sustainable learning.
