SENATOR RAISES CONCERN OVER YOUTH SAFETY AFTER FOILED SCHOOL ATTACK PLOT

/ 19 March 2026

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian has expressed alarm over a recently foiled alleged plan by teenagers to carry out an attack on a school, warning that the incident underscores growing risks faced by Filipino youth in digital spaces.

According to the Philippine National Police, authorities were able to prevent the planned attack involving minors, raising concerns about the potential influence of online communities on young individuals.

Gatchalian described the incident as a “wake-up call,” citing reports that an online gaming community may have played a role in influencing the teenagers.

“It is alarming that online platforms are being used to influence our youth to engage in violence,” the senator said.

He also highlighted the equally concerning state of students’ mental health, emphasizing the need to strengthen school-based support systems, including improved access to guidance counselors and mental health services.

In response, Gatchalian announced plans to file a bill seeking to prohibit social media use for minors aged 16 and below. He noted that the proposal draws inspiration from policies being implemented in countries such as Australia, Denmark, and Norway.

“Huwag na nating hintaying lumala ang problemang ito bago tayo kumilos,” he added, stressing the urgency of government intervention to protect the youth from harmful online influences.
