SENATOR PUSHES FOR STRONGER MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES IN CAMPUSES
SENATOR Christopher ‘Bong’ Go has reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the growing mental health concerns among Filipino youth and students by advocating for stronger mental health services in state universities and colleges (SUCs).
As Chairperson of the Senate Committees on Youth and on Health, Go stressed the urgency of institutionalizing campus-based mental health programs nationwide, especially amid rising cases of depression and suicide among students and young professionals.
Go shared his plan to refile in the next Congress a measure mandating all SUCs to establish Mental Health Offices. These offices would provide access to professional psychological support, counseling services, mental health education, and intervention programs for students, faculty, and staff.
They would also spearhead awareness campaigns and foster a culture of openness around seeking help for mental health issues.
“For my second term, with all sincerity, I will continue to push for pro-poor programs and laws, especially in the health sector. Health is wealth. We must work together to bring quality medical services closer to our people, particularly the poor and indigent. Ang kalusugan ay katumbas ng buhay ng bawat Pilipino,” Go said.
“Educational institutions must not only shape the minds of our youth but also protect their mental, physical, and emotional well-being,” he added.
“We need systems that allow students to seek help, especially those who are silently struggling.”
Under the proposed measure, the Commission on Higher Education and public HEIs would be required to implement proactive mental health programs and ensure that services are accessible, confidential, and culturally sensitive.
The bill also supports peer support networks and faculty training to recognize warning signs and respond effectively.
