SENATOR PUSHES DIGITAL LITERACY SUBJECT IN BASIC EDUCATION
SENATOR Raffy Tulfo filed a measure that aims to incorporate the teaching of digital literacy in grade and high schools.
Senate Bill 2098 or the proposed Digital Literacy Schools Act mandates the Department of Education to develop a digital literacy curriculum for grade school and high school students.
The curriculum should include basic computer skills; choosing and evaluating reliable sources of information online; development of digital communication skills; analyzing advertisements online; analyzing the different digital communities; and understanding the importance of privacy and security online.
It shall also include understanding social media and its pros and cons; understanding and evaluating online searches; navigation of mobile apps and tools; cybersecurity and data privacy awareness and producing digital content and information.
Tulfo said technology is integral in today’s digitalized society.
“In order to be successful, it is integral to be able to navigate the online sphere and be able to utilize the different tools and technologies available,” he said in his explanatory note.
The senator added that with the proliferation of misinformation, scams, and other harmful effects of social media and the internet, there is a need for young Filipinos to be able to explore the online sphere responsibly and sensibly.
