SENATOR PUSHES CCTV INSTALLATION IN SCHOOLS TO DETER BULLYING AND STRENGTHEN CAMPUS SAFETY

/ 23 March 2026

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian is advocating for the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems in schools as part of a broader effort to curb bullying and student-related violence.
Gatchalian pointed out that schools equipped with CCTV cameras tend to report fewer incidents of bullying, underscoring the role of surveillance in deterring misconduct and promoting a safer learning environment.
He also called on the Senate to explore measures that would help schools maximize their Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE) for the procurement of CCTV equipment. According to the senator, proper allocation of resources is key to strengthening campus security.
“This has been a long-standing problem, and there is a real need to discuss the reforms being undertaken by the Department of Education and the community on how to reduce, eliminate, and prevent bullying in our schools,” Gatchalian said.
The proposal is part of ongoing efforts to enhance student welfare and ensure safer educational institutions nationwide.
