SENATOR LAUDS SENATE APPROVAL OF EXPANDED PSHS ACT
SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go lauded the Senate’s approval on third and final reading of Senate Bill No. 2974, also known as the Expanded Philippine Science High School System Act, a measure he co-authored to strengthen science and technology education in the country.
“The passage of this bill is a huge step forward in empowering our youth through quality science and technology education,” Go said, expressing pride in supporting a law aimed at nurturing Filipino talent in the fields of science, research, and innovation.
The bill seeks to expand the reach of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System—the country’s premier institution for science-oriented secondary education—by enhancing its governance and allowing up to two campuses per region, except for Metro Manila, which already hosts a larger campus.
Notably, the measure provides for the establishment of a campus in the Negros Island Region, which currently lacks one.
At present, the PSHS System has 16 campuses nationwide.
The bill ensures better resource allocation and stronger emphasis on science and mathematics education, aligning with the national goal of producing more graduates who pursue STEM-related degrees and careers.
Beyond academic development, the legislation proposes to unify existing and future PSHS campuses under a streamlined governance structure to ensure consistent quality and effective operations. It also promotes the holistic development of students, teachers, and school staff.
As Chair of the Senate Committee on Sports, Go also underscored the importance of a balanced and healthy lifestyle for students.
A long-time advocate of grassroots sports development, he encouraged the youth to engage in sports to promote physical well-being and avoid harmful activities such as drug use.
