SENATOR FILES SUBSTITUTE MEASURE FOR PREVENTION OF ADOLESCENT PREGNANCY BILL

/ 23 January 2025

SENATOR Risa Hontiveros has filed amendments by substitution for Senate Bill 1979, or the proposed Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy Act, after seven colleagues withdrew their support from the committee report.

Senators Nancy Binay, Christopher ‘Bong’ Go, JV Ejercito, Jinggoy Estrada, Loren Legarda, Ramon ‘Bong’ Revilla Jr., and Cynthia Villar withdrew their signatures following controversy over some provisions of the bill.

In response, Hontiveros shared those key revisions had been made, including removing references to international standards, limiting Comprehensive Sexuality Education to adolescents aged 10 and above, and adding provisions to safeguard academic and religious freedoms.

“I have sought to address the fundamental objections raised,” Hontiveros said.

She also reassured her colleagues of her openness to suggestions and reiterated their commitment to addressing the national crisis of teenage pregnancy while fostering collaboration among lawmakers.

“Please rest assured that I remain ready and willing to listen,” she said.
