SENATOR EMPHASIZES PARENTS’ CRITICAL ROLE IN STEERING CHILDREN AWAY FROM ILLEGAL DRUGS

/ 28 April 2025

SENATE Committee on Basic Education Chairman Sherwin Gatchalian on Sunday emphasized the critical role of parents in steering children away from the dangers of illegal drug use.

He highlighted the importance of strengthening home-based guidance through systematic training.

“The foundation of good character and behavior begins at home,” Gatchalian said.

“As children navigate their way through life, parents are our strongest partners in ensuring they stay on the right path, especially in keeping them away from vices like illegal drugs,” he added.

Gatchalian expressed strong support for the Dangerous Drugs Board’s Systematic Training for Effective Parenting program, describing it as a potential model for promoting compassionate discipline, building supportive home environments, and mobilizing parents to actively protect their children from drug abuse.

“If implemented effectively, the program could serve as a national model that empowers parents to guide their children with empathy and firmness,” Gatchalian said.

He added that the initiative could be further strengthened by partnering with local government units through the Parent Effectiveness Service Program, ensuring wider reach and stronger community involvement.

The senator reiterated the need for holistic and proactive approaches in the fight against illegal drugs, starting with education and empowerment within Filipino families.
