SENATOR CALLS FOR PROBE INTO TEACHER’S DEATH DURING CLASSROOM OBSERVATION

/ 10 January 2026

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the death of public school teacher Agnes Buenaflor of Pedro E. Diaz High School, who reportedly collapsed during a classroom observation.

According to initial reports, Buenaflor felt dizzy while being observed in class, lost consciousness, and fell to the floor, hitting her head. She later died as a result of the incident.

In a statement, Gatchalian urged the Department of Education and school authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the teacher’s collapse and death.

He stressed the need to determine whether excessive workload or working conditions may have contributed to the incident.

The senator also called for a review of existing teacher evaluation and observation policies, emphasizing that these should be carried out in a professional and humane manner and should not compromise the health and well-being of educators.

Gatchalian reaffirmed his commitment to advancing measures aimed at improving teachers’ welfare, including the proposed Revised Magna Carta for Public School Teachers, which seeks to strengthen protections, benefits, and working conditions for educators nationwide. A
