SENATOR BACKS VIDEO INTERVIEWS TO PROTECT OSAEC VICTIMS FROM TRAUMA

/ 17 July 2025

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian expressed full support for using video in-depth disclosure interviews (ViDi) in cases of Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC).

The senator said the protocol is crucial to shielding young victims from further trauma.

“Matindi na ang inabot nilang trauma, huwag na nating dagdagan pa,” Gatchalian said. “That’s why I support the use of ViDi in OSAEC cases. If this can spare them the agony of testifying in court and facing their abusers, then it’s a step we must take. Justice should never come at the cost of a child’s healing.”

ViDi is a child-sensitive approach where interviews with victims are recorded and used as testimony, reducing the need for repeated recounting of abuse during legal proceedings.

Gatchalian called on law enforcers, prosecutors, and social workers to adopt trauma-informed and child-friendly protocols.

“I urge our law enforcers, prosecutors, and social workers to adopt practices that prioritize healing and justice. Gawin nating mas magaan para sa mga biktima ang makalimot, makabangon, at makapagsimula muli,” he said.

The senator has long advocated for stronger laws and systems to protect children from online abuse and exploitation.
