ISINUSULONG sa Kamara ang panukala para sa renewal ng prangkisa na iginawad sa University of the Philippines System para sa kanilang broadcast stations.

Sa kanilang House Bill 7414, iginiit nina CIBAC Partylist Representatives Eddie Villanueva at Domingo Rivera  ang pagbibigay ng panibagong 25 taong prangkisa sa UP System para sa konstruksiyon, pagmamantina at operasyon ng radio at television broadcasting stations sa loob ng UP at sa ibang lugar na sakop nito.

“The University of the Philippines is the center of excellence in mass media communication studies in the Philippines. The grant of franchise to UP to operate radio and TV stations enabled the university to maintain this standard,” pahayag ng mga kongresista sa kanilang explanatory note.

Kabilang sa mga istasyon ang DZUP na opisyal na AM radio station ng UP na sinimulan ang operasyon noong Disyembre 2, 1958 at nagsisilbing training ground sa mga estudyante ng mass communication sa unibersidad.

Maririnig ang DZUP sa Metro Manila hanggang sa Cavite at Laguna, gayundin sa Bulacen at Pampanga sa pamamagitan ng 1602 kHz.

“The station’s tagline “Kasali Ka” aims to convey the message that DZUP is not only for the UP community but also for everyone who actively participates in matinong usapan para sa maunlad na bayan,” idinagdag pa ng mga mambabatas.

Nagsisilbi rin ang istasyon bilang community radio station ng UP Diliman campus na pundasyon ng freedom of expression at academic freedom sa UP.

“To sustain its vital role, DZUP needs to continue to operate. This, there is an urgent need for the renewal of its franchise, which is set to expire on September 2020,” dagdag pa ng mga mamba-batas.
