REMOTE LEARNERS NEED REMEDIATION — STUDY
MOST teachers believe that students need remediation under the distance learning setup, a study conducted by the National Research Council of the Philippines showed.
Based on the research “Bridging the Gap in Remote Teaching and Learning” conducted by the team of Dr. Celina P. Sarmiento, 90 percent of the teachers answered “yes” when asked: “Will the students need remediation?”
The NRCP is an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology.
The agency polled 28,859 public school teachers nationwide.
The study focused on teachers’ experiences and coping methods in the new learning environment, as well as the emergency assessment and instructional delivery systems that have been developed.
Sarmiento noted that during the pandemic, the pressing demand for remote teaching prompted teachers to make hasty changes to their routines.
“Kahit sabihin po na na-move na natin ‘yung klase from June to October, it still takes time to develop the skills needed to deliver remote teaching effectively,” he said during “Emergency Remote Teaching Experiences brought by Covid19” webinar.
She added that remote learning assumes a certain level of student independence, something that was not accounted for in the old normal.
