INAPRUBAHAN na ng Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso sa 2nd reading ang panukala para sa pagtatayo ng campus ng Polytechnic University of the Philippines sa Leyte.

Ang House Bill 8985 o ang proposed PUP-Leyte Campus Act ay inihain nina Reps. Vicente Veloso III, Mark Go at Eric Go Yap.

Alinsunod sa panukala, itatayo ang campus sa munisipalidad ng Leyte sa lalawigan ng Leyte.

“The PUP-Leyte Campus shall primarily provide short-term technical-vocational, undergraduate and graduate coursees within the areas which, in the determination of the Board of Regents, hereinafter referred to as the Board, are within its competency, and are aligned with the human resource development goals of the Provice of Leyte and Region 8,” nakasaad sa panukala.

Mandato rin ng PUP-Leyte Campus na magsagawa ng research at extension services, gayundin ng progressive leadership kabilang na rin ang pag-aalok ng graduate degrees sa pamamagitan ng distance learning sa ilalim ng PUP Open University System.

Sa Senado, isinusulong ni Senadora Imee Marcos ang kahalintulad na panukala na naghihikayat sa gobyerno na maglaan ng kaukulang pondo sa ilalim ng appropriations General Appropriations Act.

Sa ngayon, ang PUP ay mayroong mahigit 20 campuses at extensions sa Central Luzon, Southern Luzon at Metro Manila.

Sa tala, ang PUP ang pinakamalaking state university sa Filipinas na may mahigit 70,000 enrolled students.
