IPINATATAAS ng ilang kongresista sa P40 bilyon ang pondo ng Department of Education sa susunod na taon para sa pag-iimprenta ng self-learning modules.

Sa plenary deliberations  kaugnay sa proposed P606.47 billion 2021 DepEd budget, hinimok ni Bohol 1st District Rep. Edgar Chatto ang kanyang mga kapwa mambabatas na pag-aralan ang budgetary allocation ng ahensiya sa reproduction ng SLMs.

Ipinaliwanag ni Chatto na batay mismo sa pahayag ng DepEd, aabot sa P40 bilyon ang kailangan nila para sa pag-iimprenta ng mga kailangan pang SLMs sa susunod na taon, subalit nasa P20 bilyon lamang ang nakalaan sa panukalang budget kasama na ang unprogrammed funds.

“In the most appropriate time when amendments will be accepted, I hope, and I would like to appeal that this increase in budget is very, very necessary and should be included in the amendments,” pahayag ni Chatto, chairperson ng House Special Committee on Climate Change.

Una nang inihain ni Chatto, kasama ni Negros Oriental 1st District Rep. Jocelyn Sy Limkaichong, ang House Resolution No. 1274 na humihikayat sa House Committee on Appropriations na ikonsidera ang budget augmentation sa printing at reproduction ng SLMs para sa school.

Ayon kay Limkaichong, sponsor ng budget ng DepEd, aabot sa 1.1 bilyon ang kailangang modules para sa first quarter ng school year 2020-2021.

Sinabi ni Chatto na maging ang natitirang Special Education Fund at pondo mula sa Brigada Eskwela ay hindi na sasapat para sa pag-iimprenta ng kakailanganin pang SLMs.

“The SEF in local government is not that much actually, it is only generated some percent from real property taxes and for small communities especially in rural areas, this is very,  very small amount, larger maybe in cities where the real property taxes are higher. In other words, we cannot say that this could be the main source of the fund,  it could be supplementary but not really a primary source of fund for this purpose,” dagdag ni Chatto.
